Hot water quietly eats up about a third of the average New Zealand power bill, yet hot water heat pumps — the most efficient way to heat water we have — are still in only a fraction of Kiwi homes.

In this interview, I sat down with Annie Jefferson, co-founder of A2W Hot Water Heat Pumps, to find out exactly how the technology works, what it costs, and how to switch without getting caught out.

Annie came to heat pumps the long way. She and her husband Anthony ran a gas-fitting business for over a decade before making the switch themselves. That gas background is part of what makes her such an amazing ambassador, and a clear, down-to-earth guide.

  6. Think whole-of-life, not sticker price. Fully installed systems run roughly $6,500–$11,500 inc GST. Green loans (and the coming Ratepayer Assistance Scheme) can make the switch cash-flow positive from day one.

Annie Jefferson is the co-founder of A2W Hot Water Heat Pumps, New Zealand’s specialist hot water heat pump installer, based in Carterton. Annie and her husband Anthony came from a gas-fitting background - running a gas business in the Hutt Valley for around 12 years - before making the switch to hot water heat pumps and founding A2W Hot Water Heat Pumps around three years ago.
