How Much Does a Hot Water Heat Pump Cost in NZ?
2026 pricing guide — what you'll pay, what's included, what affects the price, and how long it takes to pay for itself.

What you'll pay
A fully installed hot water heat pump in New Zealand costs between $6,399 and $9,700 for an integrated (all-in-one) system including supply, installation, old cylinder removal, plumbing, and electrical connection. Split systems can range from $4,500 to $13,000+ depending on whether you're retrofitting to an existing cylinder or installing a full new system.
That's more than a standard electric cylinder ($2,500 installed) but significantly less than you'll pay in running costs over the system's lifetime. A heat pump uses 60–75% less electricity than a conventional cylinder — the upfront premium pays for itself within 5–8 years, and then you save money every year for the remaining 10–15 years of the system's life.

What's included in the installed price?
When an installer quotes you a fully installed price, it should include everything you need. Here's the typical breakdown.
| Typical cost | |
|---|---|
| Heat pump water heater unit | $2,000–$9,000 depending on brand and capacity |
| Installation labour (plumber) | $800–$2,000 for a standard replacement |
| Electrical work (licensed electrician) | $400–$1,200 for new dedicated circuit |
| Old unit removal and disposal | Usually included — confirm with your installer |
| Plumbing connections and fittings | $1,000 to $1,500 depending on pipe runs |
| Warranty registration and commissioning | Usually included at no extra cost |
| Typical total installed price | $6,399–$9,700 for integrated systems |
What might cost extra
Switchboard upgrade
Older switchboards may not have capacity for a new dedicated circuit. Upgrade cost: $300–$800.
Relocating the hot water system
Moving from an indoor cupboard to an outdoor location adds plumbing runs. Extra cost: $500–$2,000+.
Gas disconnection
If switching from gas, disconnecting the gas supply is $100–$300 via your gas retailer.
Concrete pad or base
Integrated units need a solid, level outdoor base. Concrete pad if needed: $500.
Extended pipe runs
Split systems with long distances between outdoor unit and cylinder add cost: $300–$800+.
Building consent (rare)
Most residential installations don't require consent, but check with your local council if in doubt.
Running costs — what you'll pay each year
Annual hot water energy costs for a typical 3–4 person NZ household using 3,400 kWh of hot water energy per year.
Based on 3,400 kWh/yr hot water demand (EECA). Electricity at 30c/kWh. Solar blend at 12c/kWh. Gas includes daily fixed charge.
How to pay for it — green finance options
The upfront cost is the biggest barrier to adoption. Here are the main ways NZ homeowners finance a heat pump water heater.
Green home loan top-up
Most NZ banks offer green loan products or sustainable home loan top-ups specifically for energy-efficient home upgrades.
Rates are 1–2% lower than standard personal loans. If you have a mortgage, this is usually the cheapest option.
Interest-free or low-interest finance
Some installers offer interest-free payment plans over 12–24 months. Rinnai has noted the HydraHeat is eligible for NZ Green Energy Loans. Ask your installer about finance options at the quoting stage.

Pay cash and save immediately
If you can afford the upfront cost, paying outright gives the fastest return.
At $700/yr savings, a $7,500 system delivers a 9.3% annual return on your investment — significantly better than most savings accounts.
Government grants (limited)
The Warmer Kiwi Homes programme provides grants for eligible households, though it currently focuses on space heating heat pumps and insulation.
How to get the best price
Things to check
- Get at least two or three quotesPrices vary significantly between installers. Always compare like-for-like — same brand, same model, same scope of work. Our installer partners provide transparent, all-inclusive pricing.
- Ask exactly what's includedA good quote should itemise: unit supply, installation labour, electrical work, old unit removal, plumbing, and commissioning. Beware quotes that exclude electrical work or list it as an extra.
- Check warranty terms before choosing on price aloneWarranties range from 2 years to 20 years for cylinders. Rheem and Rinnai typically offer 5–7 year heat pump component warranties. A slightly more expensive system with a better warranty may cost less over its lifetime.
- Don't buy on price alone — check installer credentialsA licensed plumber is legally required for hot water installation in NZ. Check credentials at masterplumbers.org.nz. A poor installation can void your warranty and reduce the system's efficiency and lifespan. Some brand's also require a brand accredited installer for the warranty.
- Consider timing — don't wait for an emergencyIf your current hot water system is over 12 years old, start getting quotes now. Emergency replacements give you no time to compare and you'll likely end up with whatever your plumber has on the truck — usually a standard electric cylinder, not a heat pump.
